Fair call: why Fairtrade matters
Fairtrade isn’t charity: it’s a professional link between producers and those that source from them that’s based on respect and fair business practice.
Buying Fairtrade products ensures fair wages for thousands of small and struggling farmers, as well as factory workers and their families. It helps eradicate child labour and long hours, and to end poverty in developing countries. Fair Trade is about stable prices, fair hours, decent working conditions and the empowerment of farmers and workers around the world.
That’s why Ethical Edit sources from fair trade suppliers wherever possible in our markets, including one of our long-standing supply partners in Kolkata, India. Founded in 1934, this company was one of the first to develop fair trade and organic cotton practices.
“Our goal is to meet the expectations of companies searching for authenticity, consistency and quality in their production sourcing, while ensuring the continued progress in the conditions of our workers’ lives,” says Rajat, the owner and director of this inspirational manufacturer.
“We appeal to those who ask themselves, ‘Is it possible to change the world through everyday decisions’? Those who know that opting for natural, organic, fair trade materials will make a tangible difference.”
Our supply partner uses only GOTS certified cotton sourced from a farmer-run cooperative of over 35,000 small and marginal farmers. All cotton is organically farmed and GM free, with strict plans to eliminate harmful chemicals. Their stitching factories are SA8000 certified and their cotton is FLOCERT and Fair Trade-USA certified.
Around 2,500 workers make up their workforce in six factories specialising in woven and knitted textiles. We like that they don’t just comply with minimum wages, overtime compensation and incentives, they aim to go well beyond the minimum.
They provide additional benefits to their workers, such as transport to and from work, company sponsored meals, a health plan and funding for their workers’ children's education.“We believe that we are doing what we should to protect our future and our people,” emphasises Rajat.
Here at Ethical Edit, we’re proud to work with such inspirational partners and we’re proud to be Fairtrade Certified too. Most of all, we love supplying their fabrics and garments to like-minded customers in New Zealand and Australia - companies who, like us, believe in helping others by choosing Fairtrade, sustainable and fully traceable garments.”
